Ed Sheeran - Biography and discography, all albums and songs

Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran (full name: Edward Christopher Sheeran) is a British singer, songwriter, musician and producer. He was born on February 17, 1991, in Halifax, West Yorkshire, and grew up in Framlingham, Suffolk. One of the most commercially successful British singer-songwriters of his generation, Sheeran blends pop, acoustic folk, soul, R&B, hip-hop and elements of the British singer-songwriter tradition. His international breakthrough came in 2011 with The A Team and his debut album +. Later, Thinking Out Loud, Shape of You, Perfect, Photograph, Bad Habits and Shivers established him as one of the biggest pop artists of the 2010s and 2020s.

Childhood and early musical interests

Ed grew up in a family closely connected with art and culture. His father, John Sheeran, worked in the arts and education, while his mother, Imogen Sheeran, was involved in design and jewellery.

As a child, Sheeran sang in a church choir, learned to play guitar and gradually began writing his own songs.

During his school years, he had a pronounced stutter. Sheeran later said that one unexpected way of working on his speech was through rap. After receiving Eminem’s album The Marshall Mathers LP as a child, he learned almost the entire record by heart and tried to reproduce its rapid-fire delivery.

His interest in rap later proved no less important than his love of acoustic music. Rhythmic phrasing and the ability to switch quickly between singing and rapping became part of his own songwriting language.

Early recordings

Sheeran began recording music independently as a teenager.

One of his earliest releases was The Orange Room EP, issued in 2005. It was followed by Ed Sheeran, Want Some?, You Need Me, Loose Change and Songs I Wrote with Amy.

These early recordings differ noticeably from his later stadium albums. Voice, acoustic guitar and simple arrangements formed the foundation, but even then Sheeran was combining the singer-songwriter tradition with hip-hop and grime.

After moving to London, he performed almost continuously at small venues, open-mic nights and club events. The sheer number of shows helped him develop a live method that remained central even after he moved into stadiums: one performer, an acoustic guitar and a loop station.

No.5 Collaborations Project

A key independent release was No.5 Collaborations Project, issued in January 2011.

The project brought Sheeran together with figures from British grime and hip-hop, including Devlin, Wiley, JME and Ghetts.

For an acoustic singer-songwriter, the collaboration might have seemed unusual, but it reflected his musical thinking perfectly. Sheeran never treated guitar-based songs and rap as incompatible territories: in both, rhythm, storytelling and direct lyrical delivery were central.

The success of the independent release significantly increased industry interest in him even before the arrival of his first studio album.

+ and the international breakthrough

In 2011, Sheeran signed with Atlantic Records and Asylum Records.

His first major single was The A Team. The song, about a young woman facing addiction and difficult circumstances, was built almost entirely around acoustic guitar and voice.

In the United Kingdom, The A Team reached No. 3 and later earned Sheeran his first Grammy nomination, in the Song of the Year category.

On September 9, 2011, his debut studio album + (Plus) was released.

It included The A Team, You Need Me, I Don't Need You, Lego House, Drunk and Give Me Love. Acoustic guitar remained the foundation, but the arrangements already showed clear soul, R&B and hip-hop influences.

The album topped the UK chart and transformed Sheeran from an independent club performer into one of the country’s most prominent new songwriters.

× and Thinking Out Loud

His second studio album, × (Multiply), was released in June 2014.

The production became considerably broader. Pharrell Williams, Rick Rubin, Benny Blanco and other producers worked on the material. The acoustic core remained, but it was joined by more pronounced pop, R&B and hip-hop elements.

The first single was Sing, created with Pharrell Williams. The track gave Sheeran his first solo UK No. 1.

One of the album’s central tracks was Thinking Out Loud. At the Grammy Awards, the song won two prizes: Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.

Another enduring hit was Photograph, which gradually became one of Sheeran’s most recognisable ballads.

The × era also made the unusual nature of his live format particularly clear. Even in front of enormous audiences, Sheeran could spend much of a show effectively alone onstage, building full arrangements with guitar and a loop station.

÷ and the global peak

On March 3, 2017, Sheeran released his third album, ÷ (Divide).

It became the biggest commercial phase of his career.

Ahead of the album, Shape of You and Castle on the Hill were released simultaneously. The former combined pop with minimalist dance rhythms, while the latter was built as a nostalgic guitar song about growing up in Suffolk.

Shape of You became one of the biggest global hits of the decade and earned Sheeran a Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance. ÷ itself won Best Pop Vocal Album.

Another major hit was Perfect. Additional versions with Beyoncé and Andrea Bocelli brought the song to an even wider audience.

The scale of ÷’s dominance on the UK chart was unusual even for a major pop release: all 16 tracks from the album entered the UK Top 20 simultaneously.

The rise of streaming and situations like this led the Official Charts Company to change its rules. Since July 2017, no more than three tracks by the same lead artist can appear in the main UK singles chart at the same time.

The subsequent Divide Tour firmly established Sheeran as a global stadium artist.

Songwriting for other artists

Alongside his solo career, Sheeran has consistently written songs for other performers.

Early in his career, he worked with One Direction, writing or co-writing songs including Moments, Little Things and other tracks for the group.

With Taylor Swift, he recorded Everything Has Changed and later contributed to End Game.

One of his biggest songwriting successes for another artist was Love Yourself by Canadian singer Justin Bieber. The song was written by Ed Sheeran, Benny Blanco and Justin Bieber and received a Grammy nomination for Song of the Year.

Sheeran has also written or co-written material for The Weeknd, Major Lazer, Rita Ora, Anne-Marie and other artists.

His songwriting process often begins with a simple melody or chord progression. Even when the final production becomes elaborate, the song itself usually retains its meaning and structure when performed with nothing more than voice and an instrument.

No.6 Collaborations Project

After the enormous success of ÷, Sheeran returned to the collaborative format he had already explored during his independent years.

On July 12, 2019, he released No.6 Collaborations Project.

The album featured Justin Bieber, Cardi B, Camila Cabello, Eminem, 50 Cent, Travis Scott, Bruno Mars, Stormzy, Khalid, Chris Stapleton and other artists.

The record deliberately has no single genre centre: pop, rap, R&B, rock and the British urban scene appear as a sequence of individual collaborations.

The biggest commercial single was I Don't Care, recorded with Justin Bieber.

= and Bad Habits

After completing a long touring cycle, Sheeran took a break and returned on October 29, 2021, with the album = (Equals).

By this point, the themes of his songwriting had also changed. Sheeran had married Cherry Seaborn and become a father, so family, adulthood and responsibility occupied a much larger place in his lyrics.

The first major single of the new era was Bad Habits, one of the most electronic and dance-oriented tracks in his catalogue.

The next hit, Shivers, continued the bright synth-pop sound.

However, = is much broader than those two singles. Electronic pop sits alongside acoustic ballads and songs about family, love, loss and changing priorities.

− and personal crisis

The album − (Subtract) was originally conceived as an acoustic project for which Sheeran had been gathering material for many years.

In early 2022, personal circumstances completely changed the direction of the album.

During Cherry Seaborn’s pregnancy, doctors discovered a tumour that could not be treated immediately. Around the same time, Sheeran’s close friend, entrepreneur and SBTV founder Jamal Edwards, died. The musician was also involved in a court case concerning alleged plagiarism in Shape of You.

Sheeran abandoned much of the previously prepared material and, in a short period, wrote a new cycle of songs about fear, loss, anxiety and trying to cope with what was happening.

− was released on May 5, 2023. The main co-writer and producer was Aaron Dessner, a member of The National who had previously worked extensively with Taylor Swift.

Compared with ÷ and =, the sound was deliberately more intimate. Voice, acoustic guitar, piano, strings and restrained electronics moved to the foreground.

The album received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album.

Autumn Variations

On September 29, 2023, only a few months after −, Sheeran released Autumn Variations.

The album was issued through his own Gingerbread Man Records, with Aaron Dessner once again serving as producer.

The title and overall concept were inspired by Enigma Variations by English composer Edward Elgar. On several songs, Sheeran turns to stories about different people in his circle and the changes taking place in their lives.

The album was deliberately positioned outside the “mathematical” series and was not accompanied by a campaign on the scale of Shape of You or Bad Habits.

Even so, Autumn Variations topped the UK Albums Chart.

The mathematical series

Five numbered albums built around mathematical symbols formed a distinct era in Sheeran’s career:

+ → × → ÷ → = → −

The series traced his path from an early acoustic singer-songwriter to one of the world’s biggest stadium pop performers, ending with the most intimate and personal album of the cycle.

In 2024, the compilation +-=÷× (Tour Collection) was released, bringing together key songs from this era. The release also topped the UK Albums Chart.

Play and a new album cycle

On September 12, 2025, Sheeran released his eighth studio album, Play.

The album opened a new phase following the end of the mathematical series. While − focused on grief, fear and personal crisis, Play is noticeably brighter in both mood and sound.

While making the album, Sheeran explored musical traditions from different countries and searched for points of connection between Western pop and other melodic and rhythmic cultures.

One of its central singles was Azizam. The title comes from a Persian term of affection, and the song’s musical concept is linked to Persian cultural influence.

Sapphire incorporated Indian musical elements. A separate version of the track was later released with Indian singer Arijit Singh.

A more personal side of the album appears in Old Phone. The idea came after Sheeran switched on an old phone and found messages, photographs and conversations connected with earlier periods of his life.

The standard edition of Play contains 13 tracks:

  • Opening
  • Sapphire
  • Azizam
  • Old Phone
  • Symmetry
  • Camera
  • In Other Words
  • A Little More
  • Slowly
  • Don't Look Down
  • The Vow
  • For Always
  • Heaven

Expanded editions with additional tracks were released later.

Play became Sheeran’s ninth release to top the official UK Albums Chart.

Loop Tour

The new album era continued with the Loop Tour.

The name directly refers to the technique that has been part of Sheeran’s live identity since his independent years: using a loop station to build multilayered arrangements live onstage.

In 2026, the tour travelled through Australia, New Zealand, Latin America, the United States and Canada, while the final part of the year includes additional concerts in South America and Mexico.

The North American leg includes major stadiums and arenas in Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Toronto, the New York area, Boston, Dallas and other cities.

Despite the scale of the production, the central idea of the show remains connected with the format developed in small clubs: voice, guitar and rhythmic, instrumental and vocal loops created in real time.

Musical style

The foundation of Ed Sheeran’s songwriting remains the acoustic song, although throughout his career he has freely incorporated elements of pop, folk, soul, R&B, grime, hip-hop and electronic music.

The influence of rap is especially evident in his lyrical rhythm. In You Need Me, I Don't Need You and the early No.5 Collaborations Project, rapping is a fully integrated part of the composition rather than a separate stylistic decoration.

His folk side can be heard in Castle on the Hill and Galway Girl, R&B is prominent in material from the × era, while electronic pop is especially clear in Bad Habits and Shivers.

Play expanded this palette through influences from Middle Eastern and South Asian musical traditions.

At the same time, Sheeran’s most consistent trait remains the simplicity of the song’s core. Most of his compositions can be reduced to voice, melody and a chord progression: production may change dramatically, but the song itself is expected to work without it.

Loop station and live approach

The loop station holds a special place in Sheeran’s career.

During a performance, he may first record a percussion pattern by striking the body of his guitar, then add chords, vocal parts, harmonies and additional sounds. Each layer repeats in a loop, allowing a single performer to build an arrangement that would normally require a full band.

Sheeran was using this method even before signing a major-label deal and kept it after moving into arenas and stadiums.

Over time, his concert production became far more elaborate, with large screens, additional musicians and complex staging. Even so, solo sections built around guitar and loop station remain one of the defining elements of his live shows.

Awards and commercial achievements

By 2026, Ed Sheeran had won four Grammy Awards from 17 nominations.

Wins:

  • Thinking Out Loud — Song of the Year
  • Thinking Out Loud — Best Pop Solo Performance
  • Shape of You — Best Pop Solo Performance
  • ÷ — Best Pop Vocal Album

Sheeran’s achievements in the United Kingdom are especially striking. By 2026, he had accumulated 14 No. 1 singles and nine No. 1 albums on the Official Charts.

In 2019, the Official Charts Company named him the leading UK chart artist of the 2010–2019 decade.

The longevity of his catalogue is also evident in airplay statistics. According to PPL, in 2025 Sheeran once again became the most-played artist across UK radio, television and public spaces. It was his eighth such result in eleven years.

Ed Sheeran built one of the biggest pop careers of his generation around a comparatively simple foundation: voice, guitar, melody and lyrics. Over the years, grime, hip-hop, R&B, electronic pop and musical influences from different parts of the world have been layered around that core, but the basic songwriting principle has remained largely unchanged. Even in the world’s biggest stadiums, many of Sheeran’s songs still work in essentially the same form they might have had in a small club: one musician, one instrument and a story strong enough to hold an audience without an elaborate arrangement.
